Finishing wood: past and present
The Briwax blend was developed in 1860 by a man named Henry Flack. Its purpose was to revolutionize the process of finishing wood, and that was really Flack's primary concern. Flack succeeded and the blend he created, now owned and incorporated by Briwax, was so superior that it was recognized by the British Crown and craftsmen worldwide.
At that time, environmental concerns were not an issue, and the Briwax blend was as close to perfect as possible. However, in the 1990s concern arose over the use of toluene in paint and finishing products. The need for environmentally safe wood finishes became evident, and Briwax responded to the call with an evironmentally free toluene replacement.
Briwax's toluene alternative
Toluene, used in small amounts as the solvent in Briwax Original, was phased out. Mineral spirits was put to use as a toluene alternative, and Toluene Free Briwax was created.
Toluene Free Briwax utilizes a blend identical to the beeswax and carnauba combination in the original product, and the functionality is the same. Toluene Free Briwax is available in six wood finishes (as well as clear), and is equally effective for finishing wood. After two coats of Toluene Free Briwax, the durability and gloss of the finished product is increased and patina is within reach.
